GSA Planning was engaged by Ashfield Council to independently assess a development application for the redevelopment of the Ashfield Civic Centre. Designed by Brewster Hjorth Architects, the proposal involved the construction of a new building, as well as alterations and additions to the Council’s Civic Centre and administration buildings. This included an expanded library, community meeting rooms, customer service centre, administration offices, retail/commercial tenancy and landscaped plaza.
The proposal was considered to have significant public benefits through the upgrade of the library facilities and the inclusion of an open space plaza. The contemporary design maximised solar energy, improved the visual appearance and identity of the building within the surrounding locality and provided public open space. The design of the Civic Centre was regarded as a precedent for other development to occur in the locality as it promotes appropriate infill development and attractive open space areas which encourage social interaction and help to revitalise the Ashfield Town Centre.
